Robert Smith started the meeting at 8:03 am with opening remarks and welcomed all visitors. Robert also thanked everyone for the hard work and effort at the Dixie Deer Classic-thanks to those involved in the Calling Contest and the Call Makers Contest. So far, he has heard a lot of positive comments about the event.
Ken Moore gave the invocation.
Robert Smith presented the minutes from the last meeting. Motion to approve by Ken Moore, 2nd by Ted White. Minutes were approved.
Henry Smith presented the financial report. Richard Plattenberger brought a question up on the toll charges and what those were for, and it was discussed those charges were related to the RD trailers. Motion to approve by Ken Moore. 2nd by Ted White. Financial report was approved.
Chris Coxen presented the DB Update.
Chris discussed the Alcoa Project meeting. The NCWRC will be taking ownership of the property.
Chris discussed the current turkey trapping project in NC. Working with the media team in Edgefield to provide media coverage of the project.
Chris brought a request to the Board for consideration of funding for prescribed burns. This request was from the Asheville Fire Crew. The NCNWTF has funded $15,000.00 in the past. We did not receive a request in September for the funding. The burning started in December and will continue through May. Robert Smith asked about getting the benefit for the acreage it appears to be 2,000-3,000 acres in this year’s program. Motion to approve by Bill Collart. 2nd by Ken Moore. Richard Plattenberger asked how the money will roll forward and Jason Huffstetler asked about developing an audit process and getting documentation on how the funds will be used. After further discussion the motion was approved to fund.
Chris Kreh presented the Turkey Project Leader Update.
Chris provided an update on the Wild Turkey Ecology Project. It is a 4-year project. The current trapping stands at 61 birds trapped in the Mountain Region, 60 birds trapped in the Piedmont Region, and 40 birds in the Coastal Region. Volunteers from the NWTF are needed if you can participate and assist. Please contact Chris Coxen to volunteer for the trapping, the Piedmont and Coastal Regions have the greatest need.
Chris discussed getting the research team from NCSU involved in the project to come and present at the September Board Meeting.
NCRWC Commissioners Meeting will be held on April 22 and 23. April 22 will be the Wild Turkey Meeting and Chris will be presenting the Gobbler Chronology results. The meeting is open to the public and will be held in Raleigh.
Greg Ward asked about the turkey trapping program at the airports. The program is still ongoing. This has been a successful program and to date 60 turkeys have been sent to Texas.
Howard Rumfelt presented the Seed Program Update.
Howard updated that the google document has been updated on the NCNWTF website.
Dealing with corn orders by the truckload.
Bonni Stephenson provided a brief WOW update to be held at Camp Raven Knob in Surry County. Registration is open currently.
Roger Reynolds and Richard Plattenberger provided an update on the reverse raffle. The event will be held on August 22 in Troy, NC. Calling it the Reverse Raffle Shindig. No cost for the facility and they have sold the first ticket to the event. We could also have the Board Meeting on August 23 at the facility.
Treating as a fundraising event. $100.00 ticket per person includes dinner. You do not have to be present to win.
Discussed local artist Brook McBride attending the event, music between draws, DJ make it a fun afternoon.
Tim Draughon presented an update on the Frogman Event on July 25 at Sage Creek Archery in Surry County.
Robert Smith wanted to discuss the funds raised by this event and how the money raised would be distributed and to which charities.
It was clarified that the funds raised would go towards the state outreach programs and Hope for the Warriors who has assisted with the event in the past.
Robert Smith discussed the amount of the donation to Hope for the Warriors. Bill Collart made a motion for a 50% donation. Greg Ward suggested a 25% donation of money raised by the event and if the event reached $50,000.00 net proceeds then we make a 50% donation to Hope for the Warriors. Bill Collart amended his motion. 2nd by Howard Rumfelt. Motion approved.
Bonni Stephenson discussed the State Youth Hunting Photo Contest and if the Board wanted to continue for this year. Perry Bryant made a motion to continue. 2nd by Ken Moore. Motion approved.
Richard Plattenberger brought a request to the Board for the Union County Chapter to provide funding in the amount of $2,000.00 for a local event for 3rd graders. The funds will go towards pencils and bookmarkers, etc to give to the children. Motion to approve by Ken Moore. 2nd by Roger Reynolds. Motion approved.
Brent Phillips provided an update on the museum. He is currently planning on a workday for March 21. Anyone that can assist let him know. He will be reaching out to members.
David Lee asked for the Boards assistance for a veterans fishing event to be held on May 16, 2020 at Lake Mcintosh. Great event to attend and anyone that can help it would be appreciated.
Ken Moore made a motion to adjourn the meeting. 2nd by Brent Phillips. Motion approved. Meeting adjourned.
